Let the Research Begin

One of the borderline morbid Stranger Things comics.  I like those the best.

Ever heard of Peter David?  He writes one of the comic books I faithfully buy.  Well at least until they end it in a couple months or so.  He writes Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.  He also writes X-Factor, which has a really good reputation in the X-Men universe, but I don’t follow that one…yet.  I enjoy the storylines in Friendly Neighborhood.  The artwork is often less than stellar, but the writing is very interesting.

Yesterday I found out Peter David also writes Star Trek books.  (OK, if there was any doubt before this point, you now are fully confident that I am hopelessly a nerd.)  I’ve tried to read Star Trek books before.  I don’t think I’ve finished a single one yet.  I started some Q trilogy years ago and got extremely bored about a third of the way into the first installment.  Then I tried to read the new Star Trek Titan series where Riker and Troi get their own ship, the USS Titan, following the events of “Star Trek:  Nemesis”.  That one was better, but I still got bored.  Plus there was a silly social agenda written into it.  I understand the third Titan book is the best so far, but I don’t know if I’ll have the patience to find out myself.

So yesterday I discovered that Peter David writes a series called Star Trek:  New Frontier.  The 16th book in this series recently came out.  It centers on a captain known as McKenzie Calhoun.  So it’s not based any TV/Movie trek captains.  Well that right there was a plus to me.  New ground.  Interesting.  However, some of the other characters in the stories have appeared in past TV series.  For example, Commander (but now Admiral) Shelby from the “Chain of Cammand” episodes of TNG is a major character.  Also Robin Lefler played by Ashley Judd in “The Game” TNG episode is present.  So there are some familiar characters, but for the most part it’s open to the imagination.  So eager to check out New Frontier, I headed to the closest store that would carry paperbacks and all I could find was the newest one, “Missing in Action”, the 16th installment.  So this is where I’ve jumped in.  Read the first 80 pages or so last night and I am very impressed.  Peter David has grabbed me and pulled me in.  So far the action is much faster, the characters are written with more humor, and they are also much more relatable than any other Trek book I’ve tried out.  So far I recommend it.  Nice little jaunt of escapism.  Especially when we are without new Trek episodes for a good long while.

Well, that’s it for me, guys.  Have a Happy Friday.  Live long and prosper.  Infinite weirdness in infinite combinations…
