Toolin Around on Imeem.com
August 23rd, 2007That Adrienne Pierce CD that I found on imeem.com got to me wondering what else they have available on that site. So I figured I’d create an account and do a little bit of exploring. So here are a few songs by some artists that I’ve been listening to lately.
Leigh Nash is one of my all-time favorite vocalists, so I had to include one of hers.
This Rilo Kiley song is one that I just found out about. I got turned onto Rilo Kiley several years back when I went through a phase exploring the artists trying to break out on the web via mp3.com. This song is way different than I would have expected from them, but it is flat awesome.
Trevor Rabin is an artist I grew up on. One of the best friends I ever had in my life got me turned onto Yes in 7th grade. And at that time Trevor Rabin had led them to their biggest commercial success in 90125, which was originally supposed to be his solo album with help from bassist Chris Squire. Next thing he knew he had not only Chris, but Jon Anderson, Alan White, Trevor Horn and Tony Kaye in the studio as well. And they figured hey…why not call ourselves Yes again. So this is how I was introduced to Yes, which automatically makes me vastly different from your average Yes fan. But I don’t care. 90125 is awesome and belive it or not, “Owner of a Lonely Heart” is the weakest song on it. In 1989 I bought 2 tapes which I’ve kept closeby my entire life since. Well, OK, they’re in CD form now. Well, OK, they’re on my iPod now. One being “Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman, Howe” and the other being “Can’t Look Away” by Trevor Rabin. There are 2 instrumental songs on that album on which Trevor plays every instrument except drums if I remember correctly. I loved those songs. And now that Yes has returned to their older prog style and Trevor is forever picked on by Yes fans, he has migrated to the world of movie soundtracks where he has complete freedom over the music he makes. So it’s kind of cool to go to a movie these days and fairly often see the name of one my favorite musicians on the screen and get to hear more of those instrumental pieces he always excelled at. If you’ve seen “Armageddon”, “Gone in 60 Seconds”, “Enemy of the State”, “National Treasure”, “Snakes on a Plane”, or even more recently “Hot Rod”, then you’ve heard Trevor’s stuff.
“New Favorite” is my favorite Alison Krauss song.
Rosie Thomas is an artist I recently found on emusic and I really enjoy her voice.
Spock’s Beard is one of my favorite neo-prog bands. And “The Good Don’t Last” is a great song. So there you have it. Just a few tracks to listen to if you like.
UPDATE - Apparently the Rilo Kiley song only plays in 30 second preview mode unless you have an imeem account and are logged in. Sorry about that, but apparently that’s the way the band has decided to have their music represented on imeem.
