Star Trek TOS Remastered on HD DVD

September 13th, 2007

At long last the new remastered version of Star Trek: The Original Series has been announced with a release date of November 20th, 2007.  It’s a 10-disc set and going for 218 smackeroos.  That’s right, for just 218 bucks, you too can get lost in a fantasy world where they don’t use money.  Course if I did that, I would be in a real world with no money…

It seems in the press release and Star Trek store that Paramount got so excited about releasing Star Trek in HD that they neglected to give some specifics about the set.  Except for the bonus materials.  Those are covered in detail.  But…as far as I know, the episodes that have been aired in the remastered versions are not a complete set of the series.  Does this mean that this set includes all 3 seasons of TOS?  The name of the product would seem to indicate that, but it could also just be a set of the episodes they have remastered so far…  A typical DVD set of any given season of a 1-hour show is typically 5 or 6 discs, so I dunno.  Of course now I’m comparing HD DVD to DVD…  I have no idea how many HD discs would cover a season…  I’m just confused as to why they don’t come out and say how many epidsodes there are.

Anyway, here’s a promo video.  I enjoyed the snipped about touring the exterior of the ship.  “The opportunity fans have been dreaming of”…  Unless of course they’ve seen the 48 minutes of external Enterprise in The Motion Picture… ;)

UPDATE:  OK, so the promo video right at the end says it’s season 1.  Dang.  $218 bucks for one season.  Gee, how come more people aren’t jumping on board with HD DVD…

I’m a major Trekkie (TOS is best)……….Kirk is way better than Picard…….but I digress! $218 is a bit much, but thanks! In a couple of decades when I can afford an HD TV AND the discs, I might get it! ;o)

I love TOS as well, Lu. One of the best shows of all time. I even like it in its non-remastered cheesy effects form. I can imagine 100 years from now people seeing Star Trek in this format and saying to each other, “Did you kow that when this show was originally on the air, the space ship was dangled on a string?”

I’m with ya on the HD thing, too. Someday… Definitely not anytime soon. Let the early adopters have their fun first and a few years down the road I should be able to afford HD DVD if it survives…
